Was a Fence All They Ever Needed? (Foreign Policy; April 2005)

A photo of a Palestinian man standing near the security barrier separating Israel and the West Bank.

Topic: Should the Obama administration continue to support Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
Category: Academic research

What is it? A photograph from an article in an academic journal
Publication Information: Foreign Policy; April 2005
Author: Christopher Furlong

Accessed: March 11, 2009

Support:
An unnamed Palestinian man wearing a keffiyah

Audience and Agenda:
Foreign Policy is an academic journal dealing with international issues and the reaction of the United States. The magazine is published by the Slate Group, a division of Newsweek. It has a bimonthly circulation of over 110,000. Recently, it evolved from an academic quarterly to a bimonthly format.

Usefulness:
The photo particularly adds to the usefulness of the article in which it is placed. The man in the photo seems to be gazing into the camera with a sense of austere skepticism, giving credence to the article’s mention of the pessimism the barrier seemed to give the people. Although perhaps not incredibly useful on its own, this photograph contributes to the tone of the article and enhances the positions taken.
