Robert Wood, acting spokesman
Robert Wood, the acting spokesman for the State Department, gives a daily press conferences to the State Department press corps, on the record. In addition, several press releases are published daily.
Audience and Agenda:
The State Department’s public affairs office holds a press briefing and publishes several press releases on a daily basis. Only twelve visitors are allowed into each press briefing. According to its website, the Bureau of Public Affairs “vigorously pursues the State Department’s mission to inform the American people and to feed their concerns and comments back to the policymakers.” Its goals include “pursuing media outreach,” educating Americans on foreign policy and its importance, answering questions for the public, and advancing the Administration’s priority foreign policy goals.
Usefulness:
Israel’s recent election has left reports curious as to the United States’s reaction and continuing diplomatic relationship with the country. Wood asserts that the United States will continue to work diplomatically with whoever is elected whenever it’s determined who won. The United States will continue to pursue a two-state solution with Israel and US-Arab allies and maintains the new Israeli government should stick to agreements made regarding Palestine by the old government. However, there are still some who believe Israel is not ready for peace regardless of which party is elected.
