Hamas: Egypt to announce Gaza truce in 2 days (Haaretz, 2/12/09)

Inside Hamas sources give limited details on an upcoming truce with Israel, saying it is two days off.

 The above sources represent the Hamas officials who spoke to the press regarding its upcoming Egyptian-brokered treaty with Israel. Egypt will announce the treaty after consulting with Palestinian factions.

 Audience and Agenda:
Haaretz, Israel’s oldest newspaper headquarted in Tel Aviv, describes itself as an independent newspaper with “a broadly liberal outlook on both domestic issues and international affairs.” The newspaper is owned by the private Schocken Family; Salman Schocken bought the paper in 1935. His son, Gershom Shocken, served as editor until his death in 1989. Currently, Gershom Shocken’s son, Amos, serves as publisher. The newspaper reports a circulation of between 72,000 and 100,000. Acording to Rebecca L, Torstrick, author of Culture and Customs of Israel, Haaretz is roughly the Israeli equivalent to the New York Times, as it is read by the “intelligentsia community” of Israel.

 

Usefulness:
The Associated Press gives an overview of Hamas’s peace negotiations in Egypt with Israel. In accordance with their stipulations, all border crossings in the Gaza Strip will be opened and Israel will receive a guarantees that Hamas will be prevented from smuggling weapons into the Strip. According to an article from Al Jazeera, Israel also requested a ban on the import of “dual use items” that could be used for military purposes. In connection with the recent elections in Israel, Hamas believes Israel will implement the long-term ceasefire regardless of which party wins because the ceasefire is in Israel’s best interest.
