Audience and Agenda:
The Camp David Accords were created for a global audience and a global purpose. The effects of peace in the Middle East would have worldwide ramifications. Then-president Jimmy Carter hosted the 12-day talks at Camp David and then witnessed the signing at the White House.
Usefulness:
The Camp David Accords were critical to fostering peace in the Middle East for a number of reasons. The first part of the accords outlines a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel that decided the fate of the Sinai Peninsula. The latter half outlined a peace process for Israel and the developing Palestinian territories. While the fate of Jerusalem was left intentionally undecided, it did set up the guidelines for an autonomous Palestinian government and outlined a withdrawal by Israel. However, the stipulations of this agreement were later interpreted differently by Israel, Egypt, and the United States. As a result of these agreements, both the Israeli and Egyptian governments now receive large grants from the United States.
